All programs lead to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. All options are accredited in civil engineering by ABET. In addition, the environmental option is dually accredited in both civil engineering and environmental engineering.

Civil engineering is the engineering of constructed facilities such as buildings, bridges, tunnels, and dams; harbors and airports; waterways, railways, and highways; water power, irrigation, drainage, and water supply; and sewerage, waste disposal, and environmental systems. Typical civil engineering projects are large, one of a kind, and important in the daily lives of a great many people. The planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of such constructed facilities are generally carried out by civil engineers. Graduates of civil engineering programs are found in engineering and administrative posts in industry, construction, research, government, and consulting firms.

Civil engineers need to be versed in a number of disciplines in order to cope with the various problems in the practice of their profession. In the civil engineering curriculum at Ohio State students study: fundamental mathematics and science, on which much of engineering is based; social sciences and humanities, to broaden their perspectives and to prepare them for professional interaction with people; a core of basic civil engineering subject areas, including courses in transportation, environment, structures, hydraulics, soils, and applied mathematics; and integrated sets of courses in the student's selected area of concentration.

Several major elective options are available

Transportation Highways, airports, transportation systems.

Structures Structural analysis, design of structural steel and reinforced concrete.

Environmental engineering Water and wastewater distribution and collection, design of treatment facilities, water quality modeling and planning. This option also constitutes an ABET approved program in environmental engineering.

Hydraulic engineering Hydraulics, hydrology, fluid mechanics, water resource systems analysis and planning, coastal engineering.

Geotechnical engineering and foundations Geotechnical engineering, foundation design, earthwork.

Construction Equipment, methods, scheduling, estimating, contracts.

Remote sensing Surveying, photogrammetry, remote sensing.

In addition to these major elective options, a generalist option is available which permits students to form a broader exposure in all of the major areas of civil engineering. Also available is an honors option to allow students with excellent academic records to design unique programs of study to fulfill individual educational objectives.

The following curriculum and list of minimum requirements for the degree Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering establish a framework within which students can develop a program of study that meets their needs. Each student admitted to the program will be assigned a faculty adviser who will provide additional guidance in the design of a personal program of study.

Dual degree program with geomatics engineering

A student may earn both the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and the Bachelor of Science in Geomatics Engineering degrees by satisfying the requirements of both degrees. Due to scheduling restraints, students should plan their dual degree program as early as possible (preferably at the beginning of the sophomore year). A list of courses required for the dual degree program can be obtained at the geodetic science and geomatics engineering departmental offices.

Advanced professional program

The advanced professional program, leading to the degree Civil Engineer, provides an opportunity for advanced engineering study beyond the undergraduate level primarily for the graduate who desires to continue preparation for a career in civil engineering practice. The requirements listed below for the degree Civil Engineer can be completed in approximately one academic year. All students will be counseled individually for an appropriate program.

Admission requirements

A baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an ABET-accredited curriculum satisfies the admission requirements. Applicants with other baccalaureate degrees in engineering, in allied fields, or from nonaccredited curricula will be considered for admission in accordance with the College of Engineering admission policy guidelines. Such students may be required to take additional courses depending upon their preparation and objectives. Such courses will be specified individually after a conference with an approved civil engineering departmental adviser.

Degree requirements

  • A minimum of 45 credit hours of courses which have been approved by the student's adviser.
  • At least 25 of the required hours must be from approved civil engineering courses.
  • The complete program of each student must be approved by the student's department adviser.

Standard of work required

A minimum cumulative point-hour ratio of 2.50 is required for the degree. Special students not working toward degrees remain in good standing with cumulative point-hour ratios of 2.00 or higher.

Admission to the Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering Programs requires a minimum cumulative point-hour ratio (CPHR) of 2.0 as well as a minimum secondary point-hour ratio (SPHR) of 2.0 in the following pre-major courses: Math 151, 152, 153, 254; Physics 131, 132, 133; ME 410; Chem 121; Engineering 181, 183 (or EG 166), & EG 167. English 110 must also be completed. Formal application is required. Students are accepted into the major in Spring and Autumn quarters. See the departmental office (HI 475) for details.
