2007 Meritorious Service Citation Recipient
Ballard Power Systems Inc.
Ballard Power Systems Inc. is the recipient of the Meritorious Service Award, in recognition of its contributions of advanced technology equipment and engineering assistance to the Buckeye Bullet 2, a fuel-cell powered streamliner racing vehicle designed and built by Ohio State engineering students.
Ballard was founded in 1979 and by 1983 was developing proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. This work has led to the availability of pre-commercial prototypes and commercial products, thereby demonstrating the practicality of the Ballard’s fuel cell technology. Fuel cells are widely viewed as viable alternatives to conventional power and generating technologies.
Ballard launched its first commercial fuel cell product in 2001 and today is recognized as the world leader in the development, manufacture and sales of zero-emission PEM fuel cells for automotive applications as well as for other nearer-term market needs, such as materials handling, backup power and residential cogeneration.
In 2006, when Ballard learned that the Buckeye Bullet 2 student team had committed to the design, manufacture and competition of a fuel cell vehicle, employees of the company offered their assistance. Ballard engineers consulted directly with Ohio State students in the design phase and Ballard even donated prototype fuel cells to power the car. Ballard and its employees have continued to support the BB2 effort through construction and testing, with engineers sometimes working six to eight hours of volunteer time a day, during their off-hours, to help BB2 become reality.
Ballard Power Systems has demonstrated a sustained, extraordinary commitment that will have a significant and lasting impact on the advancement of the College of Engineering and its students.
