Graduation Application
Carefully read and follow all of the directions. Failure to do so may result in a delay of your graduation!
Applications
Applications to graduate must be turned in 3 quarters prior to your planned graduation date. You must meet with your academic advisor to fill out the appropriate forms and have them signed by your departmental designees. If your application is turned in after this deadline you may not be eligible to graduate the quarter in which you planned.
Petitions
In order to apply to your degree program, transfer credit must be evaluated. In some cases a petition must be submitted via your academic advisor to the college office for committee review and decision. All outstanding evaluations must be completed and posted to the system prior to applying for graduation.
Please note: Filing a petition does not mean that it will be approved. You need to complete your evaluation/petition in a timely manner so that if it is not approved, you have sufficient time to take any additional classes that you may need to fulfill requirements.
Name Changes
Diplomas will be printed using the form of your name that appears on the university system. You should check your name starting the second week of the quarter in which you plan to graduate to see if it is correct. If there are mistakes, all changes to your name must be done by the university registrar in one of the following ways:
- go to room 320 in Lincoln Tower and ask to fill out a name change form
- call (614) 292-8500
- e-mail registrar@osu.edu
Some name changes will require that you provide identification (e.g. birth certificate), so you may want to call in advance to see if you need to supply that information.
Confirmation of Intent to Graduate
Between the 4th and 7th weeks of the quarter preceding your graduation quarter, you will be notified (by e-mail) that the college office has received your graduation application from your department.
If at any time your intended quarter of graduation changes, see your academic advisor immediately to update your application.
During the 5th week of your graduation quarter, you will be sent an e-mail outlining all important information regarding your graduation. In addition, a book, which will include your full name, any honors, and your hometown, will be placed at the front desk of 122 Hitchcock Hall. All graduation candidates need to review the information for accuracy, to receive their graduation line numbers, and to receive their honors braids (if applicable).
By noon on Friday of finals week, all your grades should be posted on the system. Any transfer credit or transcripts from other institutions must be turned in to the university registrar by noon of that Friday; if these grades are not in, you will not receive your diploma at the graduation ceremony. If any problems occur you will be notified by e-mail.
Honors
There are three different types of honors you can attain.
Latin honors
Latin Honors are awarded based on students’ cumulative point-hour ratio at the university. Additionally, in order to be eligible for these honors, a student must also have 90 graded credit hours of Ohio State courses. The CPHR requirements to graduate with Latin honors are as follows:
- Cum Laude (3.5-3.69)
- Magna Cum Laude (3.70-3.89)
- Summa Cum Laude (3.90+)
There are no exceptions made to the above requirements; these are based on university rules.
With distinction
Students who choose to complete an honors thesis project may graduate "With distinction" in their major. This option must be arranged through the College of Engineering before the student’s final quarter.
With honors
Students who wish to graduate “With Honors in Engineering” should go to the following link to determine their eligibility to do so: Graduation with Honors in Engineering (PDF). The application for GHIE must be submitted to the College of Engineering 3 quarters prior to graduation.
Holds
Students who have any financial obligations left to the university will not receive their diploma until those issues are settled. These can include, but are not limited to, tuition payments, exit interviews, library fines, parking tickets, etc. In addition, the university will not release your diploma or your transcripts to you or future employers until such issues are settled.
