2008 Grants

May

Rongxing (Ron) Li, professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science, received a three-year, $1.2 million grant from NASA National Space Biomedical Research Institute for “Enhancement of Spatial Orientation Capability of Astronauts on the Lunar Surface” with co-investigators Kaichang Di, research scientist, Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science; Alper Yilmaz, assistant professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science; Martin Banks; and Kul Bhasin. The scientific goal of the proposal is to develop an information system to enhance astronauts’ spatial orientation capability and reduce sensorimotor risks during manned and landed lunar mission operations. Li also has been selected to serve as a participating scientist for NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter mission and received a three-year, $399,633 grant for “Integration of Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera and Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter Data for Precision Lunar Topographic Mapping and Landing Sites Assessment” with co-investigator Di.

Ness Shroff, Ohio Eminent Scholar and professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering, has received a five-year, $6 million  Multi-disciplinary University Research Initiative grant from the Army Research Office for his project “MAASCOM: Modeling, Analysis, and Algorithms for Stochastic Control of Multi-Scale Networks” to explore the impact of long-range dependence on military networks. The overarching goal is to develop atheory that leads to the development of low-complexity andpractically-implementable control and distributed detection algorithmsthat will provide an enormous tactical advantage to the U.S. military.
